SOUNDBITE (English) Dorothee Klaus, director of the U.N. refugee agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA): "We don't know exactly what the impact is. We haven't been able to access the camp. We also had to shut down all of our services. They remain shut down until now. We probably have to, when we return to the camp, have to do an assessment of unexploded ordinances to ensure that it's safe to access our installations. And we'll also expand that assessment for the rest of the camp and preparations for this are undergoing." Ein el-Hilweh, Lebanon - 3 August 2023 4. Various of Lebanese army checkpoint Beirut, Lebanon - 4 August 2023 5. SOUNDBITE (English) Dorothee Klaus, director of the U.N. refugee agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA): "We have received sporadic images from some of our installations. We have a rather large school complex of four schools which host 6,000 children that was raided by the involved militants, and that was unfortunately also used as a starting point for the battle that has been taking place inside the camp. So significant damages are incurred on these schools we will have to assess exactly what that is." Beirut, Lebanon - 3 August 2023 6. SOUNDBITE (English) Dorothee Klaus, director of the U.N. refugee agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA): "We firmly believe that any further reconstruction of the camp and damaged habitat should be tied to a road map. This should never happen again. We need to look into ways of ensuring that stability is guaranteed in the camp and that these frequent bouts of armed clashes between militants are not happening ever again." SOUNDBITE (English) Dorothee Klaus, director of the U.N. refugee agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA): "It's a quite worrying situation. It's reflective of an unresolved conflict, of an unresolved status of Palestine refugees here in Lebanon. One can only hope that major crises, such as we've just undergone in Ein el-Hilweh, also open the door to reflecting on how can more sustainable approaches to the Palestine refugee presence in Lebanon be found." Ein el-Hilweh, Lebanon - 1 August 2023 10. Various of damages in camp STORYLINE: Damage to the school complex in Lebanon’s largest Palestinian refugee camp from recent clashes between factions could delay the start of the school year for some 6,000 children, a United Nations official said Friday. The concern arose after heavy street battles broke out Sunday in Ein el-Hilweh between Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah party and Islamist groups Jund al Sham and Shabab al Muslim. The clashes erupted after Fatah accused the Islamists of gunning down a Fatah military general, Abu Ashraf al Armoushi, in the camp. The fighting has killed at least 13 people, injured dozens more and displaced thousands from the camp, which is home to more than 50,000 people. Militants from the Islamist groups reportedly shot Armoushi from a position inside the school complex.
