In the final episode of the Great Glen Canoe Trail series you find us on day 4 on Loch Ness. With just one more day to go before we need to be at the official finish line at 3pm we needed to work hard and get some serious miles under our belts. Setting off an hour later than the guys who chose to paddle we pushed off from shore in what felt like The Black Pearl, something straight out of The Pirates Of The Caribbean. Two canoes lashed together to make a sturdy bed for a terrific structure! Two large poles A-framed at the front of both boats that held a fantastic green sail that would pull us at vast speeds along the rest of Ness! The brain children behind this epic beast of a sailing rig was Rick and his son Jack who both worked tirelessly for well over a couple of hours to make sure it was structurally safe. We pushed off from shore, hoisted the sail and headed out in to the massive Loch! Eating up the miles it became apparent we had made the right decision, we were hunting down those other dirty pirate dog team members fast! The swell was huge as we cut into their lead. Sometimes lapping over the tops of the canoes which had us scrambling for our sponges to mop up. After passing Simon, Richard and Matty who were also had their sail up. In the distance we could spot the dreaded white sail of the notorious cut-throat pirate Simon The Hat Wearer! We were gaining on him fast! After what seemed to be ages “at sea” we spotted the paddlers Ginger, Matt and Mike, they had pulled in for a much needed rest and fuel (food). As we headed for shore I decided in my infinite wisdom that it would be a good idea to head launch the drone from the canoe! Stupid idea, I nearly managed to decapitate myself in the process. After lunch another few hours were spent paddling down Loch Ness as the wind had changed. We made camp about 7 miles from the finish line! There we ate, talked about the trip, I went round and thanked everyone and then it was time for our last wild camping sleep of the trip. We awoke to calm waters and managed to get away for about 9.30am to complete the epic two day journey of this beautiful world famous Loch. We headed back on to the canal, completed one last portage before our last stop and all paddles in one massive line to complete this epic challenge. A massive thank you to Matt (the fireman) who came down and gave a donation and awesome eggs at the last camping area and also to Chris Who filmed our paddle to the finish line. A big thank you to all of the companies who helped us along this challenge (all listed below) thank you to Kelty at Highland Yaks for the shuttle service back to Fort William. But most of all thank you to each and every one of you who’s kind words of support, heart warming stories and awesome donations to the cause helped make this challenge something very, very special and what will stay with us all forever!
