Strep throat is a bacterial infection of the throat and tonsils caused by a type of bacteria called group A Streptococcus (group A strep). It is a common illness, especially in children and teens. Strep throat is spread through contact with respiratory droplets from an infected person, such as when they cough or sneeze.
The symptoms of strep throat can include:
Sore throat that is especially painful when swallowing
Fever
Red and swollen tonsils
White patches or streaks of pus on the tonsils
Tiny, red spots on the roof of the mouth, called petechiae
Swollen lymph nodes in the front of the neck
If you think you or your child may have strep throat, it is important to see a doctor for diagnosis and treatment. Strep throat can be treated with antibiotics, which will usually clear up the infection within a few days.
If untreated, strep throat can lead to complications, such as:
Rheumatic fever, a serious condition that can damage the heart valves
Scarlet fever, a rash that is caused by the same bacteria that causes strep throat
Kidney infection
If you have strep throat, it is important to stay home from school or work until you are feeling better and your fever has gone away. You should also avoid close contact with other people to prevent the spread of the infection.
Here are some tips to help prevent strep throat:
Wash your hands often with soap and water.
Avoid sharing food or drinks with people who are sick.
